A 16-year-old boy was rescued Wednesday after he fell at least 30 feet while hiking Pima Canyon Trail.
EIi Medvescek, son of Arizona Daily Star photographer Ron Medvescek, suffered serious injuries when he fell from a rock while he and his friends were hiking the trail, Ron Medvescek said.
Volunteers from the Southern Arizona Rescue Association helped Pima County sheriff's deputies find the boy, who was hiking with a group of friends who called 911 at 10:26 a.m. after the fall.
An Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter aided the rescue by lifting the boy from the site, the DPS said.
The friends were hiking when they left the trail to climb some rocks, Medvescek said.
Eli lost his footing while climbing a rock and fell, he said.
He suffered a collapsed lung, fractured femur and numerous contusions, his father said.
The boy, who remained alert as he awaited rescue, was airlifted to the hospital, said Deputy Dawn Barkman, a sheriff's spokeswoman.
